What to keep in mind A light plate compactor is effective on thin layers: fill is compacted layer by layer rather than in its full thickness at once, otherwise the lower part will remain loose. Sand that is too dry compacts poorly — it is lightly moistened. For large areas and road bases, a soil roller is more cost-effective.
